SIMD LiDAR Compression — I invented a blazing-fast lossless compression algorithm for high bit-depth LiDAR video streams, and I'll be presenting it at ICRA 2023 in London! (arxiv)
Autonomous Lunar Rovers — I led a CMU/NASA team that designed and built an autonomous microrover for exploring lunar pits. I wrote a ton of code to autonomously explore massive pits, capture panoramic HDR mosaics from the pit rim, and automatically process the imagery into photogrammetric 3D models of the pit interior. Search-Based Planning — I invented a fast exploration planning algorithm that combines raytracing, oriented A* search, and TSP heuristics to find reachable viewpoints around a lunar pit rim and plan a safe navigation route for a microrover to visit them.
Fast LiDAR Mapping — I rewrote the LiDAR Odometry and Mapping (LOAM) algorithm from scratch to improve its performance for use on small, compute-limited drones. I replaced a few key data structures, vectorized the optimization cost functions, and parallelized as much as possible. The result was a scan processing latency of ~16ms (compared to ~1000ms orig.) and ~4x lower CPU usage.
Autonomous Vehicle Motion Planning — I implemented a motion planning algorithm for General Motors' autonomous vehicles. The new algorithm ran at 400 Hz and produced smooth, dynamics-constrained trajectories for their autonomous Chevy Volt.
Nuclear Robotics — I wrote post-processing, GUI, and sensor interface software for the PipeDream and RadPiper nuclear inspection robots. These robots are helping clean up U235 deposits leftover from WWII at the Portsmouth, Ohio enrichment facility (World Nuclear News, The Robot Report, GeekWire, WESA).
